Cheff enriches lives through therapeutic riding and equine-assisted services that foster independence, confidence, growth, and inclusion for individuals of varying abilities.
Founded in 1969, Cheff was the first center in the country established specifically to provide therapeutic riding. Cheff has built a strong legacy of service and innovation, offering therapeutic riding, occupational and physical therapy, horsemanship and riding, equine-assisted learning, equine-assisted psychotherapy, and other programs that harness the unique power of the human-horse connection.
Today, Cheff is entering an exciting new chapter. Following the successful completion of a capital campaign and the construction of a new arena scheduled to open in fall 2026, Cheff is poised to expand its programs, reach more individuals and families, and deepen its impact.

Position Summary
The Executive Director serves as Cheff’s executive leader and is responsible for providing visionary leadership, strategic direction, operational oversight, financial stewardship, fundraising leadership, and organizational management. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director advances Cheff's mission, ensures the long-term sustainability of programs and services, and serves as the primary ambassador for the organization's mission and impact.
Leadership & Strategic Planning
Lead implementation of strategic goals and organizational priorities that are aligned with the mission. Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, collaboration, respect, innovation, continuous improvement, and safety. Ensure clear communication throughout the organization. Support organizational growth, succession planning, and long-term sustainability.
Governance & Board Relations
Partner closely with the Board of Directors. Provide timely operational and financial reports. Support governance activities, policy development, and implementation of Board initiatives.
Financial Management & Fundraising
Direct budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and nonprofit 501(c)3 compliance. Lead donor relations, fundraising campaigns, grants, sponsorships, and stewardship efforts. Ensure responsible use of organizational resources and long-term financial health.
Program, Equine & Facility Oversight
Lead safe and effective program operations. Oversee equine welfare, participant safety, risk management, facilities, equipment, and capital improvement planning. Maintain compliance with applicable standards and best practices. Equine-assisted program management, development, and measurement through key performance indicators and metrics.
Human Resources & Volunteer Leadership
Recruit, supervise, develop, mentor, and evaluate staff. Empower and delegate effectively. Support volunteer engagement and recognition. Maintain compliance with all relevant and applicable state and federal employment laws and regulations, local ordinances, and Cheff policies and procedures.
Community Relations & Advocacy
Serve as the public face of the organization. Build and sustain relationships with donors, community partners, healthcare providers, schools, and civic organizations. Oversee communications and outreach initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities
Perform other duties and responsibilities as determined and assigned by the Board of Directors.
Education & Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree preferred in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required (will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).
· Minimum of five years of progressive leadership and management experience with demonstrated success in strategic planning, financial oversight, fundraising, staff leadership, community knowledge and engagement, and Board relations.
· Excellent communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
· Knowledge of nonprofit governance, human resources, and employment law.
· Familiarity with PATH International standards or equine-assisted services is preferred. Experience in equine-assisted program development and measurement.
· Knowledge of equine-assisted mental health and wellness programs, credentialing requirements, and HIPAA regulations is desirable.
Work Location
This is an on-site leadership position requiring regular presence in office, barn, arena, outdoors, event, and community settings. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Compensation
Salary Range: $80,000 – $110,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
